New friendships are blossoming in time for Easter between residents at a Cheltenham care home and students from Gloucestershire College.

The students, from the School of Foundation Studies in Cheltenham, have been working on a special project since January to bring some Easter eggscitement to residents at Wentworth Court Nursing Home, as part of their social action module.

Earlier this year, the students visited the dementia-specialist home on Village Road to meet residents and map out an Easter Egg hunt, while wellbeing team leader, Silus Meadows, spent time at the college inspiring the youngsters with ideas on how to create an activity for people living with dementia.

Laden with colourful, papier mâché eggs, decorated with memory-stimulating pictures of celebrities, foods, historical events and transport from the 1950s to the 2000s, the students spent a morning with residents, talking about their memories prompted by the giant eggs which they filled with sensory treats.

Gloucestershire College tutor, Rachel Fisher said: “It’s been a really lovely experience for everybody. It’s great to see the students using their communications skills and building their confidence in talking to different people in the community.

“I think the residents have particularly enjoyed seeing some new faces and hearing the students talking about the different eggs they have made, and the decades that they have been themed upon.”

Wentworth Court Managing Director, Mitesh Dhanak added: “This is the second successful project that students from Gloucestershire College have delivered for Wentworth Court. Before Christmas, students designed 24 advent calendar boxes full of dementia-friendly surprise gifts, and for the Spring term, the team came up with the idea of an Easter egg hunt. The eggs look wonderful and will be hidden around the garden over the Easter weekend.”

“We are also delighted to be offering volunteering opportunities and pre-supported internships to a number of foundation studies students, which is also proving to be successful in building the students’ confidence and employability skills while our residents benefit from their friendship and enthusiasm.”
