Flying the Olympic Flag at Wentworth Court

While all eyes are on Team GB at the Paris Olympics, the real action has been taking place closer to home.

Residents at Wentworth Court, a specialist dementia nursing home in Cheltenham enjoyed their own Olympic event to coincide with the start of the games in Paris. Following an opening ceremony dance led by the home’s wellbeing team, the Wentworth Olympic torch, sporting red, yellow and orange tissue paper flames was passed around to signal the games officially open.

Residents and care workers took part in an afternoon of challenges, including egg and spoon races, a three-legged race and bowling. For the winners, naturally there were bronze, silver and gold medals, which the residents helped create in the days ahead of the games.

A staff space hopper race was a highlight of the afternoon, eliciting lots of laughter from the watching residents and colleagues, before the event closed with another dance display and a visit from an ice cream van.

Managing Director, Mitesh Dhanak said: “We’ve had a wonderful, memorable day, starting with a BBQ lunch ahead of an afternoon of fun and games.

“Activities like this are very important to connect people living in our dementia community with events happening in the outside world such as the Olympic Games.

“We designed the games to make them as inclusive as possible, with activities such as bowling for residents with limited mobility plus a wheelchair race, however everyone has contributed in some way, whether by creating the props and decorations, sharing memories of their favourite sports or cheering on the competitors this afternoon in the sunshine with friends and family.”
