The schools have gone back, the heatwave has abated but for one Cheltenham care home the summer holidays are still going strong.
For the residents of Wentworth Court dementia-specialist nursing home, travelling to the beach is not an easy option so the home decided to bring the beach to them complete with donkeys, a traditional ice cream van and buckets and spades.
Dermot and Barney visited from their home at Kelly’s Donkeys in Somerset, offering rides to visiting children and joining residents in their living rooms and bedrooms.

Wellbeing team leader, Ben Pargeter said: “We had lots of smiles today and recalling of happy memories of days spent by the seaside while residents built sandcastles and enjoyed ice creams.
“The absolute stars of the day though were Dermot and Barney who had the gentlest of natures and loved getting petted by everyone. It’s not every day that residents get an indoor visit from a friendly donkey, so it was a wonderful surprise for them!”
The event was part of a week of beach-themed activities that included arts and crafts and a visit to the Cotswold Country Park and Beach.
